Scientific research activities, both basic and applied, fall within the field of biomedical topics, with a particular focus on the study of the alimentary canal and hepatic parenchyma in both physiological and pathological conditions, with the aim of identifying potential therapeutic strategies.
The studies, conducted using experimental models and human biopsies, focus on the identification of new molecular pathways involved in inflammatory and fibrotic processes, which play a key role in the development of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as in the broad spectrum of non-alcoholic liver diseases (NAFLD). To investigate these processes, murine models are used in which human IBDs are reproduced by administering irritant substances such as dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS), alongside the analysis of human biopsies.
NAFLD is studied using experimental models induced by diets with altered nutritional content, rich in carbohydrates and/or lipids. Furthermore, the research activity focuses on evaluating the efficacy of molecules capable of modulating the fibrotic process, which is a common and crucial element in the progression of both studied diseases.
